Theme 4: The wind farm as a power station

Wind farms to date have been operated as a collection of individual wind turbine generators, each with their own controller and power electronics. To operate wind farms in a more cost-effective manner and producing power more reliably at lower capital cost, future research will concentrate on the design and operation of wind turbines for holistic incorporation into offshore windfarms.

This theme will therefore bring together the results of the first three themes to consider the Wind Farm as a Power Station. The work programmes for themes 1, 2 and 3 are fully defined. However, the outcomes of those themes cannot be known precisely at this stage. Therefore we are leaving some flexibility in the work programme for the Gathering Theme 4 with regard to content and project partners associated with each Work Package.

The Project will be reviewed, towards the end of Themes 1, 2 and 3 to define more precisely the scope of the Work Packages in Theme 4. Nevertheless, the indicative work for the Theme 4 Work Packages are outlined to include:

  • Array performance

  • Wind farm control

  • Connection

  • Operation as a power station

  • Integrated monitoring

  • Operations research for the wind farm

  • Integrated wind farm economics
