Theme 2.5: Subsea turbine foundations

Contact: Prof. Clive Mingham, Manchester Metropolitan University

The aim of this Work Package is to undertake an integrated study combining numerical modelling and laboratory experiments to provide detailed spatial and temporal information on wave kinematics, loads and run-up on and around deep water jacket mounts for a wide range of wave parameters.  Additionally a numerical study of wave and current scour around monopile mounts in shallow water will be carried out.
Objectives of this study are:

  • To experimentally measure flow properties and derive parameters around jacket type mounts for irregular and breaking waves.
  • To measure wave loadings (including deck slam and greenwater) on jacket type mounts for irregular and breaking waves.
  • To measure wave run-up on jacket type mounts for irregular and breaking waves.
  • To develop a numerical model of wave loading and run-up for jacket type mounts.
  • To develop a numerical model of wave and current induced scour at the base of monopile mounts.
