Research

THEME W : Baselining Wind Turbine Performance

Theme leader: Dr Simon Watson

To characterise baselines for the other Themes. In particular, to research and define existing wind turbine reliability & availability; to define the exemplar wind turbine configuration for future large scale off-shore machines; to define appropriate wind characteristics for relevant scenarios.

Sub-themes:

  • Reliability and Availability
  • Wind Turbine Configuration
  • Wind Characteristics
Simon Watson

THEME X : Drive-train Loads & Monitoring

To research drive train loads imposed on existing & future wind turbines and to devise the means to condition monitor turbines to increase availability.

Sub-themes:

  • Turbine Characterisation
  • Condition Monitoring
Peter Tavner

THEME Y : Structural Loads & Materials

Theme leader: Dr Geoff Dutton

To research the use of novel materials and management of structural loads so that future large scale wind turbines can be designed as materially optimised, more load tolerant, highly fatigue-resistant structures, with implications for improved cost-effective reliability and longer service life.

Sub-themes:

  • Wind Turbine Component Design
  • Aerodynamic Estimation for Operational Control
  • Active Load Reduction
  • Engineering Large Wind Turbines
Geoff Dutton

THEME Z : Environmental Issues

To research lightning protection, with due regard to the radar cross-section, and subsea issues to improve cost-effective availability, survivability and acceptability of large offshore wind turbine systems.

Sub-themes:

  • Foundation Scour
  • Radar Cross Section (RCS)
  • Lightning Protection
